Why buy jewelry made with recycled gold?

Posted on by Christine

I am often asked why I use recycled gold and silver in my pieces and if there is a difference in the quality of the metal. With recycled gold and silver readily available, why wouldn’t you? In fact, I am often surprised that more jewelry designers do not offer recycled gold and silver products as the quality is absolutely the same. Here is a simple explanation taken from Brilliant Earth.

“Metal mining – and gold in particular – is one of the most environmentally destructive types of mining, with 20 tons of ore required to produce enough gold for a single ring. Many gold mines also release cyanide and mercury into nearby water sources and are associated with poor safety standards, inhumane labor practices, and disregard for the rights and interests of indigenous peoples.

By using recycled metals, we decrease the global demand for newly mined gold and diminish the environmentally and socially destructive effects of dirty gold and other metal mining practices. Because precious metals can be recycled repeatedly with no degradation in quality, they are a naturally renewable resource.”

As if life wasn’t busy enough…

Posted on by Christine

With a long list of holiday orders, personal holiday preparations, and a nasty two week cough that has limited my sleep recently, the last thing I really needed was a very dirty, cold and hungry little dog to show up on our doorstep. He did though, and I could not turn away an animal in need. I cleaned him up the best I could, fed him and provided him a warm place to stay while we waited to see if we could find his owner. After calling the local shelters, vet, and placing an ad in our local newspaper, we found that no one seemed to claim this little Westie. Granted my husband was secretly overjoyed at the prospect of keeping this little guy, but our female Frenchie was not so happy with our visitor or his “advances”. After much deliberation, we contacted a local Westie rescue and this morning he was off to find his new home. Best wishes little guy!

Off to Utah…

Posted on by Christine

I’m heading out to Salt Lake City, Utah for the first time tomorrow thru the weekend for a mix of business and a bit of pleasure. Since I tend to focus most of my travels on warm weather destinations, I am actually a little excited to see some snow capped mountains. Let me rephrase that! I am excited to see some snow capped mountains as long as the snow stays put…up high…away from my naturally thin blooded body. See you Monday!

Giving Back…The Pacific Whale Foundation

Posted on by Christine

As many of you may know, I lived in Hawaii for quite a few years and this experience changed me on such a deep level. We are a family of scuba divers and passionate about the ocean! Our daughter dives with us, and our young son delights at sticking his ear in the water when we visit our Maui home to listen to the whales sing in the distance. I still think hearing the hauntingly beautiful songs of the humpback while diving or snorkeling is such a magical experience.

The first time I took my husband to Maui, he was dying to go whale watching. I was used to doing this from the shore and had never seen them while out on the water. We booked a whale watching cruise with the Pacific Whale Foundation because 100% of the profits from their tours go to supporting research, education, and conservation programs on behalf of whales, dolphins and the ocean environment. They truly love the marine environment and take great care to educate the public, while keeping a healthy distance from the amazing animals. If you ever get the chance to book a whale watching cruise in Maui, I highly recommend them.

Since this that first cruise, my husband and I have been members of the Pacific Whale Foundation and have personally donated to this organization. Now Christine Mighion Jewelry is excited to add the Pacific Whale Foundation as one of the charitable environmental organization we will be supporting with our “giving back” efforts. Recently we were able to donate a sum money to assist in the purchase of several microscopes for one of their education programs. The Pacific Whale Foundation will continue to be a program of focus for giving back through out 2012. A portion of every purchase made thru our website will go directly to support this great organization and their efforts! I will be highlighting several of their programs throughout the year and sharing our family volunteer experience when we head back in the spring.

Hugs & Thank You!

Christine
